Character.AI’s Talks with Google Signal Major Growth Prospects

Google is in discussions to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in Character.AI

In recent web search findings, it has been revealed that Google is in discussions to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in Character.AI, an AI startup founded by former Google employees Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas in 2022. Character.AI specializes in enabling users to engage in conversations with virtual versions of celebrities or anime characters, while also providing the capability to create personalized chatbots and AI assistants. The potential investment, structured as convertible notes, could further strengthen the existing collaboration between Character.AI and Google, wherein the startup utilizes Google’s cloud services and Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) for model training.

Character.AI, which offers a free-to-use platform alongside a subscription model priced at $9.99 per month, has reportedly garnered 100 million monthly visits within its initial six months. The startup caters to users aged 18 to 24, contributing to approximately 60% of its website traffic, as indicated by Similarweb data. With a focus on positioning itself as a provider of entertaining personal AI companions, Character.AI is currently engaged in discussions for equity funding with venture capital investors.

This round of funding could potentially value the company at over $5 billion, following a previous investment of $150 million in March 2023, led by Andreessen Horowitz.

The ongoing talks with Google, as anonymous sources reveal, are still in progress, and the terms of the deal remain subject to change due to the confidential nature of the discussions.

Google’s interest in AI startups is evident in its investment trends, including a $2 billion commitment to model maker Anthropic through convertible notes, supplementing a previous equity investment. This aligns with a broader industry trend where major tech cloud service providers forge partnerships with AI companies, as seen with Microsoft’s investments in OpenAI and Google and Amazon’s support for Anthropic.
