OpenAI announced the addition of three new members to its Board of Directors – Dr. Sue Desmond-Hellmann, former CEO of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Nicole Seligman, former EVP and General Counsel at Sony Corporation, and Fidji Simo, CEO and Chair of Instacart. Additionally, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman will rejoin the company’s board.

Bret Taylor, Board Chair
Dr. Sue Desmond-Hellmann
Dr. Sue Desmond-Hellmann, former CEO of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is joining the board. She has extensive experience leading major organizations like the Gates Foundation and previously at Genentech.
Nicole Seligman
Nicole Seligman, former Executive VP and General Counsel at Sony Corporation, is also joining. She has expertise in legal/regulatory matters and corporate governance from her roles at Sony and as a Supreme Court clerk.
Fidji Simo
Fidji Simo, CEO of Instacart, is the third new board member announced. She has over 15 years of consumer tech experience, including previously leading the Facebook app.
They will work alongside current directors Adam D’Angelo, Larry Summers, Bret Taylor and others to oversee OpenAI’s growth and uphold its mission of ensuring artificial general intelligence benefits humanity.
Sam Altman
Sam Altman, current OpenAI CEO, is rejoining the board after previously serving on it.
The new members bring experience across tech, nonprofit, legal/regulatory, and corporate governance that will help guide OpenAI’s growth and ensure it pursues its mission of developing beneficial artificial general intelligence.
Current board chair Bret Taylor highlighted that the new members’ leadership experience will enable oversight of OpenAI’s expansion plans.
