Apple's Prominent Role in Artificial Intelligence(AI)

Although Apple may not explicitly label its features as “artificial intelligence” (AI) or offer a dedicated generative AI product, the company holds a prominent position in the field and is expected to continue doing so.

In fact, all of Apple’s current products can be characterized as AI tools. The iPhone, which constitutes a significant portion of Apple’s revenue, stands out as the company’s foremost AI-enabled device.

Predictably, a substantial portion of Apple’s AI endeavors revolves around language processing, employing machine learning (ML) techniques—a subset of AI—to enhance system intelligence. Apple initially integrated AI into the iPhone in 2011 with the introduction of Siri, a speech-based personal assistant that leverages AI capabilities to recognize and process user requests, delivering accurate results through a clear and recognizable voice.

Over the subsequent years, Apple has developed a range of ML application programming interfaces (APIs) that are applicable across all its devices, addressing various domains such as vision, sound, natural language, and speech.

Apple’s most impactful contributions to the field of AI are likely to emerge from its investments in future advancements, and the company’s strong emphasis on academia is indicative of this commitment. To this end, Apple has established the Apple Scholars program, which provides fellowships to Ph.D. students pursuing cutting-edge ML and AI research at renowned universities worldwide.
