On December 9, OpenAI officially launched Sora, in the ongoing 12 Days of Ship-mas event.
Sora, the text-to-video AI tool, is now available on Sora.com. It allows users to generate high-quality, AI-powered videos based on text prompts.
What is Sora?
Sora is OpenAI’s innovative tool that transforms text prompts into video content. Sora enables users to create up to 20-second videos using text instructions. It also features capabilities for animating images, remixing existing videos, and blending scenes using AI.
The model is now available for ChatGPT subscribers in the US and “most other countries”, with two tiers of access:
- ChatGPT Plus Plan ($20/month):
- Generate up to 50 videos (1,000 credits) monthly.
- Videos are capped at 5 seconds in duration and 720p resolution.
- ChatGPT Pro Plan ($200/month):
- Unlimited generations with up to 500 priority videos monthly.
- Videos can be up to 20 seconds long and in 1080p resolution.
- Exclusive perks: watermark-free downloads and up to five simultaneous generations.
New Features with Sora Turbo
The launch also includes Sora Turbo, an updated version of the model with enhanced functionality:
- Storyboards: Create videos using a sequence of prompts to guide the narrative.
- Photo-to-Video: Animate still images into dynamic videos.
- Remix Tool: Refine or modify video output using additional prompts.
- Blending Scenes: Combine two distinct scenes into a seamless video.
Users can explore a curated feed of AI-generated videos created by the Sora community on the platform’s new Explore page.
Videos created with Sora include visible watermarks and C2PA metadata to ensure transparency. Before uploading content, users must agree to rules prohibiting the use of explicit, violent, or copyrighted material, as well as any images of individuals under 18. OpenAI has emphasized its commitment to responsible use and acknowledged the challenges of moderation.
“We’re starting a little conservative,” said Rohan Sahai, Sora product lead, during the livestream. “If our moderation doesn’t quite get it right, just give us that feedback.” Violations of the platform’s policies could result in account suspensions or bans.
While Sora is live in the US and many other regions, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman confirmed it will not be available in most of Europe and the UK for the time being, citing delays in rollout. However, even without a ChatGPT subscription, users can browse the Explore page to view community-generated content.
