Mira Murati’s AI Startup Is Building Its Dream Team

AI industry is maturing. Murati is taking time to establish the company’s direction, rather than rushing to market with a specific product. Murati’s choice to focus on artificial general intelligence is a research-focused approach to AI development.

The AI industry is seeing another major shift as Mira Murati, former OpenAI CTO, builds her new startup. She’s already attracted some notable talent, including Jonathan Lachman, who previously led special projects at OpenAI. The company has brought in about 10 researchers and engineers from major AI companies like OpenAI, Character AI, and Google DeepMind.

What makes this interesting is that the startup is still in very early stages – it doesn’t even have a name yet. It’s focusing on artificial general intelligence (AGI), one of the most ambitious goals in AI research. This follows a pattern we’ve seen before in the AI industry, where experienced leaders leave established companies to pursue new ventures and often bring talented colleagues with them.

Murati’s background is particularly notable. She served as OpenAI’s CTO and briefly stepped in as interim CEO during the company’s leadership crisis in late 2023 when Sam Altman was temporarily removed as CEO. Her departure from OpenAI in September adds to a series of high-profile exits from the company, including research leaders and a co-founder.

Reuters reported that Murati is seeking over $100 million in funding.

This reflects the dynamic nature of the AI industry, where talent moves frequently between companies and new ventures can quickly attract significant attention and resources. Similar patterns emerged when Anthropic was formed by former OpenAI employees, showing how the AI landscape continues to evolve through these transitions.
